The Canon ixus 55 Digital is an ultracompact JeansPocket™ Certified digital camera which replaces the ixus 55. It has an ultra white brillant finish without unwanted reflections.

The Canon ixus 55 has 5.0 megapixels resolution, 3x optical zoom (on a Canon's exclusive "UA" lens), a F2.8 maximum aperture, and a shutter speed range of 15-1/1,500 sec. New is the extra large 2.5 in. LCD with 115,000 pixels resolution. Grid lines can be displayed to facilitate keeping the horizontal level.

The Canon ixus 55 allows you to shoot a clip of 640x480 movie at 30fps until the SD memory card is full. Take night pictures with a long shutter speed of 15 sec., and Scene Modes automate exposure settings for different shooting situations.

The Canon ixus 55 has an AF Assist Illuminator to aid in obtaining focus in low-light conditions. Optional accessories include a High Power Flash HF DC1 to supplement the camera's built-in flash when the subject is too far away for proper illumination (the shooting range is extended approximately twice), and an All-Weather Case AW-DC50 to take underwater shots at depths of down to 3 meters (9.8 ft.) and is also ideal for taking worry-free pictures in the rain, at the beach, or on the ski slopes.

The Canon ixus 55 is the "little brother" to the ixus 750 we reviewed earlier this year. It has very similar specs, with the exception of being 5-megapixels compared to the ixus 750 7-megapixels. This compact and durable model offers all of the features that users have come to expect from Canon, like a large resolute 2.5-inch LCD, high-quality 640x480 movie mode, along with various fully automatic exposure modes. There's the typical Auto mode, which the camera selects all options like shutter speed. aperture, ISO, White balance, etc. Users can also choose from 11 different scene specific modes: Digital Macro, Portrait, Night Snapshot, My Colors, Kids & Pets, Indoor, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, and Underwater (when used with the optional underwater case.) Manual mode is similar to Auto with access to more advanced settings such as ISO, White Balance, Metering and Color Effects.
Canon has produced yet another winning digital combination of sleek compact design, speedy performance and great image quality. With the camera taking up less space than a deck of playing cards, it can be carried in almost any size pocket or handbag. The ixus 55 has an MSRP of about £249, which we feel is an excellent value when compared to similar models of its class. So if you're in the market for an extremely pocketable 5-megapixel digicam, be sure to take a look at this model.
