The Exilim Zoom EX-Z1200 builds on the Z1000 ten-megapixel camera launched last year and a revised version, the Z1050, brought to market by Casio earlier this year. The new model sports the customary 3x optical zoom and the now de rigeuer anti-blur, anti-shake technology. Its motion detection system allows the camera to automatically set the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed for fast-moving subjects. The Z1200 has a 2.8in LCD viewfinder and packs in 114MB of memory. An SD/MMC-compatible memory card slot makes for more photo storage space, and the camera can take high-capacity SDHC cards. Casio's Z1200: hi-res widescreen video grabber too .The camera will shoot video at up to 840 x 480 at 30fps, but you'll definitely need a memory card for footage - the internal memory is big enough to hold just 13s of video at that resolution. The Z1200's battery is sufficiently capacious for 340 shots per charge, Casio claimed. Due to hit the shops by the end of the May, the Z1200 will retail for around £280.

There's a bit of a check list here and it's full of ticks. Let's see, unfeasibly large pixel count, face recognition, image stabilisation, focus tracking, scene modes, program modes, range of metering options, soft flash, live histogram - yep, all present and correct. What's particularly nice about the Z1200 is that it looks very simple to operate, yet it has loads of advanced features packed in and more tricky modes hidden just beneath the surface. It all starts with a 3x optical zoom, which isn't exactly spoiling you, but the beauty of having a 12Mp resolution is that it can be cropped and still leave a decent sized picture. Besides the tiny, recessed on/off button there are three other buttons on the top of the camera. What they do is very simple. There's a playback button and a camera button next to each other - they simply swap whichever mode you are in to the other one. There's also a display button which allows the LCD screen brightness to be increased or made more vivid, the live histogram to be turned on and whether the shooting details appear scattered about the screen in a traditional fashion, or are arranged on a panel. I tend to avoid this as it eats into the picture from the side.
